As a “Lab Designer,” I am working independently with multiple organizations to implement plant tissue culture capability in the new legal cannabis industry. Cannabis is in many ways an underdeveloped crop but the potential social, economic and environmental impacts are very large. Plant tissue culture is but one fundamental technique used to support crop improvement. Crop improvement is an incredibly complex activity that usually draws from public as well as private resources. Due to the newly legal status of this plant in many, but not all, jurisdictions, public resources like germplasm collections do not exist and may not be forthcoming. My work focuses on building the needed capacity for crop improvement within privately funded, profit-seeking organizations both in the USA and internationally where allowed.
