The Coronavirus pandemic calls for leaders with an ability to address complex adaptive challenges that do not have simple solutions. This series of three interactive webinars provides an introduction to Adpative Leadership frameworks and how they can be utilized during this crisis.

The Coronavirus pandemic is creating unprecedented health, psychological, social, economic, and political challenges globally. Each one of us faces a multitude of personal, professional, and community-wide problems of an intensity and complexity rarely experienced in our lives. We all are coping with the fear and anxiety generated by both the current situation and the uncertainties about the future. This time calls for leaders with an ability to address complex adaptive challenges that do not have simple solutions. Adaptive leadership is a mode of leadership that engages people in a change process.

Adaptive leadership is a core component to the Kinship Conservation Fellowship program. This introductory series, led by Beatrice Ungard, of three 90 minute adaptive leadership webinars is offered to support conservation practitioners during this pandemic crisis. The series emphasizes the development of capabilities over understanding theory. 

Through these sessions, you will learn the basic concepts of adaptive leadership and adaptive work and work in small breakout sessions to practice new skills. Self-management practices will be interwoven throughout the three sessions to help you manage your behavior and enable you to address your challenges thoughtfully, intentionally, and with self-confidence. It is recommended to participate in all three sessions.

Introduction to Adaptive Leadership

Facilitating adaptive work calls for a unique set of leadership skills that are different from the ones based on authority and expertise. In this introductory session, you will explore the role of an adaptive leader and learn to distinguish between technical problems and adaptive challenges.

Engaging in Personal Adaptive Work

There are four adaptive challenge archetypes that are recurring in life. In this session, you will choose one of these archetypes to explore a personal challenge that has emerged from the pandemic.

Session 3 - June 17, 2020, 9:00 a.m. CDT

Transforming ‘Difficult Conversations’ into Learning Conversations

Adaptive leadership requires engaging others in conversations that are often uncomfortable. The adaptive leader must be very aware of his/her internal state and the overall dynamic of the conversation so as to respond well. In this session, you will learn to create the space for transformative learning conversations.
